Alex Villalobos is an experienced lawyer and former public servant with an intimate knowledge of Florida law, the legislative process, and state procedural rules.

Alex was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1992. He was then elected to the Florida Senate in 2000, where he served until his term limit ended in 2010. During his legislative career, he gained a reputation for championing bipartisanship, especially in the area of education. He also held many leadership positions, including Senate Majority Leader, Senate Majority Whip, Chair of the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation, as well as Chair of the Committees on Judiciary, Criminal Justice, and Education. Most notably, during his most recent senate term Alex served as the Senate Rules Committee Chair. As Rules Chair, he reviewed each and every bill filed to determine which committee it should be referenced to, and made recommendations to the senate president based on his findings.

As an attorney, he has represented clients before state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels, including the Florida Supreme Court. Having worked in both the public defender's and state attorney's offices, he brings a broad understanding of the criminal justice system. Alex has also proven to be an effective advocate in the court of public opinion, engaging with media opinion leaders to generate editorial support for client objectives. Alex has successfully presented issues before the editorial boards of the Tampa Bay Times, the Miami Herald, the Sun Sentinel, the Palm Beach Post, the Orlando Sentinel, the Tampa Tribune, the Lakeland Ledger, the Daytona Beach News-Journal, and the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union.

Alex played a pivotal role in securing an appropriation for more than $50 million for citizens of Broward and Palm Beach counties whose trees were destroyed as a result of a failed state program to eradicate citrus canker from trees in certain counties in Florida. His expertise in the law of unconstitutional takings cases as well as his intimate knowledge of the legislative budgetary process were critical in securing the court ordered compensation for these families. He provided advice on certain trial and appellate level proceedings relating to these cases, which have been in the judicial system for more than 15 years. His keen insight was instrumental during many of the phases required to get the job done and was unwavering in his support for these families.
